Marcus Mosiah Garvey
“If you are black, you are an African.” One of the most “far-thinking” African-American/ “black” men that lived across two centuries was Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Born in rural Jamaica, a small island in the Caribbean in 1887, Garvey became the first migrant to start a large scale movement in North America.
Believing in the concept that regardless of birth place all “black” people are Africans, he set out to find a means of returning blacks to their homeland in the immediate post-slavery era. Garvey migrated to the USA where he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association; the largest movement of its kind at that time. He also was a founding partner in the Black Star Line, a shipping company which he not only planned to compete in trading with white shipping companies, but also to use as a means of transport for blacks who wanted to return to Africa. Garvey was also one of the first major black entrepreneurs. Besides the shipping, he started a chain of black owned and operated businesses such as restaurants, laundromats, grocery stores and a printery.
With his “war cry” of; “Up you mighty race, you can achieve what you will!” Garvey set out to liberate his people from the “white dependency” and mental lethargy instilled into them during slavery. Be a leader! Be the first to purchase a Marcus Garvey t-shirt! Wear it to show others that you are mentally liberated!. Show the world that you have confidence in yourself: “If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won. Wear a Garvey t-shirt to show the world that the “black skin is not a badge of shame but a symbol of national greatness.”
